CCTV systems, or Closed Circuit Television systems, is a system of remote monitoring with the use of cameras. The video cameras are used to transmit signals to a specific location where they may be viewed by a limited set of monitors.

The difference between a Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) system and a television broadcast is that the number of receptors in case of a CCTV monitors are numbered or limited and are also known beforehand. Here the signal is not openly sent but sent to a limited number of monitors by employing point to point links which are generally wireless.

There are many ways through which CCTV systems can go about their job. They may both passively record videos and playback at certain intervals, or can be actively monitored by a group of security personnel. Further, a combination of the above two techniques can also be employed to increase the efficiency of the system. Digital Video Recorders are used in advanced form of CCTV systems using which we can record for several years at a stretch.
